The centre of Khao Lak (ie where most shops and restaurants are located) is around Nang Thong beach. Bang Niang beach to the north is a second, smaller village with its own amenities.

Bangkok Airports

Please bear in mind if you are flying from Bangkok to Phuket that there are two airports in Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi (the new one) and Don Mueang (the old one).

The airport code for Bangkok is BKK, Don Muaeng DMK and Phuket HKT

Don Mueang is the designated low cost carrier terminal. If you are flying with AirAsia, Nok Air or Lion AIr, you need to fly from Don Mueang airport.

If you are flying with Thai Airways or Bangkok Airways, you need to fly from Suvarnabhumi airport. Please double check which airport you’re departing from! Travelling from one airport to another will take at least an hour.

The Similan Islands consist of 9 islands. Most of the islands are about 20 to 30 minutes from each other by liveaboard boat.

Manta Ray at Koh Bon

Koh Bon

After some of the best dive sites the Similan Islands have to offer, Similan liveaboards typically head 16 km north from Similan Island #9 to Koh Bon.

This island is famous for Manta Rays. The dive site (5m to 35m depth) has a steep ridge and wall with lots of soft corals. Here you can expect to find leopard sharks, octopus and barracuda.

Koh Tachai

16 km north east of Koh Bon is Koh Tachai. One of the best dive sites in Thailand, Koh Tachai is often visited by manta rays and, if you are lucky, whale sharks. This dive site has barrel sponges and Gorgonian fan corals with giant granite boulders scattered around the dive site. Schools of barracudas and bat fish, leopard sharks, and rays are regularly seen here. An excellent dive site.

Richelieu Rock

30km north east of Koh Tachai is the famous Richelieu Rock. Here is your best chance to see whale sharks.

The dive site (5m to 40m depth) is a pinnacle covered in soft and hard corals, with lots of schools of fish. Groupers linger on the bottom, Barracudas circle above, thousands of glassfish circle around the pinnacle. A superlative dive site and widely considered the best dive site in Thailand.
